Join us for the Democratic Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina – Hear the President – Live!

From Sunday, September 2nd through Friday, September 7th, almost 6,000 Democratic Party delegates and thousands of other important Democratic Party officials and supporters will gather in Charlotte, North Carolina. It will begin with a Charlotte street festival celebration and a Party hosted by our D.C. Democratic State Committee and ten other delegations; continue with official Democratic Party business (including the party platform and nomination of President Obama); and culminate with President Obama's acceptance speech.

The 2012 DNC convention in Charlotte is a tremendous opportunity for those of us who support statehood for the 618,000 people in the present District of Columbia, so that we can finally join the Union as full and equal citizens of the state of New Columbia. We have a chance to take the statehood movement to the next level by building the foundations of an enduring national network to support our cause.

We will journey to Charlotte together -- imagine a convoy of 25 cars and perhaps a bus sporting statehood signs down I-95? In Charlotte, we will work to mobilize the support of important Democratic officials for our cause. We will assign you to a team that is focused on a specific state and help you gather information about that state's delegation. As a member of a team, you will be trained on how to introduce yourself to your state's delegates, educate them about New Columbia, and ask them to take specific actions to support us. We will also guide you on how to build a long-term relationship with the people you meet, to build a long-term national network of support.

While we do this important work, we will also have great fun with our fellow D.C. volunteers, D.C. delegation, and Democratic activists and officials from all over the country. Just think about who you might stand next to in a hotel lobby.

We will organize transportation by bus and/or carpools, leaving Sunday, September 2nd and returning Friday, September 7th. We are also making every effort to organize free or low-cost housing with Charlotte residents (it's just 5 nights, so let's be prepared to share rooms and possibly use a sleeping bag). So take five days and join us for a great time and a great cause!
