The Perfect Storm: Where Fashion, Music and Social Issues Coalesce by Guest Writer Terri Shifflet from livingwiththelaw.com

On September 23, 2023, Living with the Law and Kapture Models hosted an event to raise awareness and support for the elderly residents of Ridgecrest Condominiums located in Washington, D.C.

The residents were presented with an order to vacate due to health and safety code violations which they have been trying to fix for years. Many of the residents have lived their entire lives at Ridgecrest and cannot afford to move anywhere else. They are currently living in unhealthy and unsafe conditions and need help to raise the money they need to make the repairs. The event was well attended despite Mother Nature’s attempt to ruin it with Tropical Storm Ophelia’s downpours.

The evening began with a delicious dinner of southern style home cooking provided by Ms. Tevette Taylor, doing business as Chef T. Dinner was followed by an amazing fashion show featuring models of different nationalities, wearing the designs of local designers: Seleh Designs, Malcolm’s Custom Made-to-Fit by world renowned designer Malcolm Staples, the Ken Davis Collection by local skating celebrity/activist and now designer Kenneth “Rollo” Davis, and Alkebulan Prints by Delight Dzansi. The show was fabulous and rivaled anything you might see at the biggest fashion events. In fact, the designs by Malcolm Staples were recently featured during the Emerge Fashion Show at New York Fashion Week. After the Fashion Show, the audience members were treated to the fabulous vocal stylings of: Sandra Ash, recently informed she is being considered for a Grammy Nomination, the remix of her original song “Walk Away;” the soulful Ayanna Gregory, daughter of Actor/Comedian/Activist Dick Gregory; and the Go-Go Band Social Flow. Well known performer William “Bill” Crews, a regular at these events showcased his usual, diverse talents. And, not enough can be said about D.J. Marty, among the best on the East Coast and beyond, “Can you Wobble with me”.

There were also a handful of vendors in attendance at the event, presenting their products. It was a multi-faceted evening full of food and music with presentations focused on emerging social issues as a result of the gentrification in Washington D.C. Towards the end of the evening the finalists for Ms. DMV were presented; the winner who will be crowned in December at a location and date to be determined. The evening was a huge success!
